Workbook

How to use this workbook

This workbook is for rereading. It is not a substitute entrance. The first reader should meet the novel cold; the returning reader may use this guide to locate the doors, pressure points, and local tests.

The earlier version was too thin. This current pass adds a chapter docket spine, problem sets, teaching routes, and a disciplined index while preserving the central rule: orientation may increase pressure, but it must not discharge it.

Use each docket as a prompt for attention, not as an answer key.

Governing rule

Orientation without absolution

Explanation is dangerous when it becomes a seventh operation. This apparatus may name a hinge, locate a scene, or formulate a problem. It may not process the novel for the reader.

  • Do not reduce the volume to “git as metaphor.” The repository vocabulary matters only where it touches grief, relation, and survivability.
  • Do not rank the three endings as wrong, wronger, right. Stabilize, Crash, and Superposition are simultaneous weather systems.
  • Do not turn Nishasprache into a puzzle, glossary, or conlang. Its refusal is the ethical event.
  • Do not let Superposition become a solution. It is an ongoing burden of authentication without collapse.
Primer

Volume primer

The primer below names the volume’s machine without substituting itself for the fiction. Each term should send the reader back to a scene, not away from it.

Between the Versions is not powerful because it borrows repository vocabulary. It is powerful where repository vocabulary touches grief. Branches matter because the lost person can return as mutually incompatible survivable versions. Merge requests matter because coherence becomes a form of violence. Conflict markers matter because they let the page hold incompatible desires without pretending they are dialectical progress.

The volume’s deepest temptation is mastery. A reader can learn the terms — branch, merge, conflict, authentication, superposition — and believe the system has been understood. The novel keeps interrupting that mastery with bodily and relational facts: breath cannot occupy two atmospheres at once; the version one can survive is not the person one lost; a private language dies when made public. The workbook therefore treats technical vocabulary as a route back to grief, never as an explanatory key.

The three merge requests are not a menu of wrong answers followed by a correct answer. Essential, Total, and Beautiful Nisha each answer a real human desire. The essential version answers the need to hold something. The total version answers the hunger not to lose anything. The beautiful version answers the longing to protect the beloved from damage. Their violence is inseparable from their tenderness. A weak reading of Volume V rejects them too quickly; a strong reading feels why Lin might want them.

Superposition is the most easily abused term in the volume. It can sound like an elegant solution: authenticate them all. But the novel’s point is not that contradiction is clever. The point is that some relations remain accountable only if they are not forced into one file. Superposition is not freedom from decision; it is the burden of refusing a false decision while continuing to live. The workbook asks readers to keep that burden painful.

Nishasprache and 王 mark the limit of apparatus. The workbook may say that Nishasprache is not a code to break, that 王 is not a glossary item, that the final fields are honest because they remain blank. But it may not supply what the novel withholds. The volume ends by protecting the boundary the entire cycle has been building toward: meaning that cannot survive public extraction.

Repository

The final volume is not a place but a version-control layer where all prior jurisdictions persist and compete.

Branch

A prior nation returned as a live version rather than a completed episode.

Merge request

A coherence offer. Each request promises rescue by deleting, totalizing, or beautifying contradiction.

Conflict marker

The volume’s strongest form: grief rendered as incompatible lines that must not be collapsed too quickly.

Nishasprache

Meaning constituted by relation. It is not withheld because the author forgot to invent it; it is withheld because public display would destroy it.

The final non-field: a marker for what the repository cannot process without betraying.

Coverage

Coverage map

The apparatus follows a coverage rule rather than a word-count rule. Every chapter receives a docket. Every docket links to the novel. Every docket includes a local pressure, a risk, and a test by which the chapter can be challenged.

LayerWhat it doesWhat it refuses
PrimerNames the volume’s specific machine and vocabulary. It does not summarize the plot.
Chapter docketLocates the local mechanism and a load-bearing scene. It does not declare the scene solved.
Problem setCreates questions for rereading, seminar, and critique. It does not reward agreement with the apparatus.
Self-auditRecords the apparatus’s own dangers. It does not let theory protect weak passages.
Routes

Rereading paths

Fast route

Read the primer, then the chapter dockets for the chapters you are assigning or revisiting. Do not read every prompt before rereading the novel.

Teaching route

Use one docket per class session. Begin with the anchor link, then ask students to test the docket against the chapter.

Resistance route

Read only the risk fields. Treat the workbook as a list of possible failures and decide which ones the novel earns.

Docket spine

Chapter docket spine

Each docket below is a return route into the novel. The link opens the chapter anchor; the docket gives the reader a test, not a verdict.

Author’s Preface · Volume V: Between the Versions

open novel anchor
Local machineNames the pact openly: coherence is the offer, not the exit.
Load-bearing sceneThe preface must make the reader want an ending and then treat that want as evidence.
Risk / pressure testDoes the repository frame deepen grief, or does it over-computerize it?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. What desire for an ending does the preface expose before the repository begins?
  2. How does naming Faust 5.0 change the danger of the pact?
  3. Where does the preface make coherence feel like relief rather than theory?
  4. What does it mean that the book records your desire rather than asking for it?

Practice

  1. List the promises the preface refuses to make.
  2. Write the ending you want, then identify what the preface would do with that want.

Repository Note · Reading Path: One Repository Traverse

open novel anchor
Local machineGives permission to read linearly while denying that linearity is canon.
Load-bearing sceneA path is useful; a path is also a temptation.
Risk / pressure testDoes the note orient without pre-solving the ending logic?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. What kind of permission does a “straight through” path give, and what does that permission conceal?
  2. How does a reading path become one more version?
  3. Where does the note make sequence feel both necessary and false?
  4. What reader anxiety does the path soothe?

Practice

  1. Draw the path as a map and then mark where it lies.
  2. Write a warning label for linearity that still allows reading.

Chapter 1 · README

open novel anchor
Local machineReading is signing. The first page establishes that exposure, acknowledgment, and authorization have already converged.
Load-bearing sceneThe page waits; waiting is logged.
Risk / pressure testDoes the opening make the reader feel trapped by procedure before explanation arrives?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. When does the README become a contract?
  2. What non-action does the page succeed in treating as action?
  3. How does waiting become evidence?
  4. Where does the warm box interrupt the page’s attempt to classify?

Practice

  1. Mark every verb that turns reading into signing.
  2. Track how the page responds to silence differently from speech.

Chapter 2 · Quarantine Lobby

open novel anchor
Local machineThe space between nations is not outside them. It is a holding layer where prior jurisdictions remain active.
Load-bearing sceneQuarantine is not safety; it is delayed classification.
Risk / pressure testDoes the chapter feel like suspension or merely transitional hallway?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. What is quarantine protecting: Lin, the repository, prior versions, or the reader?
  2. How does the lobby differ from a border?
  3. Where do previous nations remain active inside a space that claims to be between them?
  4. What emotional state does quarantine create before any branch appears?

Practice

  1. Identify residues from earlier volumes still operating in the room.
  2. Describe quarantine without using the word safety.

Chapter 3 · Recursion Boundary Test

open novel anchor
Local machineExit fails as loop, but the loop is not a bug. It is the boundary acknowledging itself.
Load-bearing sceneThe boundary tests the desire for outside.
Risk / pressure testDoes the repetition alter pressure, or does it merely announce recursion?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. What does the boundary learn by being tested?
  2. Where does loop become proof rather than malfunction?
  3. How does the chapter treat the wish for outside?
  4. What changes on the second pass through the same barrier?

Practice

  1. Track one repeated element and name what pressure changes.
  2. Write a false bug report for the boundary, then correct it as design.

Chapter 4 · Branch 0: The First Fault-Line

open novel anchor
Local machineOrigin returns as one branch among others. The first fault-line is no longer before the cycle; it is inside the repository.
Load-bearing sceneOrigin becomes versioned.
Risk / pressure testDoes this chapter make Volume 0 newly unstable without turning it into answer-key?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. What happens to origin when it becomes one branch among others?
  2. How does Volume 0 change when reached late?
  3. Where does the chapter refuse to become an answer key?
  4. What kind of authority does origin lose inside the repository?

Practice

  1. Compare “origin” as beginning, file, branch, and wound.
  2. List what Branch 0 explains and what it destabilizes.

Chapter 5 · Branch I: Compression

open novel anchor
Local machineCompression reappears as the Essential Nisha: the version small enough to keep.
Load-bearing sceneThe branch tests the mercy of reduction.
Risk / pressure testDoes the branch expose why essentializing can feel like love?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. Why is the Essential Nisha emotionally tempting?
  2. What does reduction promise Lin that totality cannot?
  3. Where does the branch make “something” feel almost enough?
  4. What gets cut away before the cut looks violent?

Practice

  1. Name three details Essential Nisha might keep and three she must lose.
  2. Rewrite the branch’s rescue as a receipt.

Chapter 6 · Branch II: Magnification

open novel anchor
Local machineMagnification reappears as the Total Nisha: everything recorded, nothing witnessed.
Load-bearing sceneTotal record is a counterfeit resurrection.
Risk / pressure testDoes the chapter make totality emotionally tempting before rejecting it?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. Why does Total Nisha feel like care before it becomes archive?
  2. What does complete record fail to restore?
  3. Where does total seeing become another loss?
  4. How does the branch replay Volume II without repeating it?

Practice

  1. Inventory what totality promises; then circle what no record can supply.
  2. Find where the branch mistakes preservation for presence.

Chapter 7 · Branch III: Abstract

open novel anchor
Local machineAbstract reappears as a formal Nisha: pattern, motif, score, icon, and prediction error.
Load-bearing sceneBeauty can protect or circulate.
Risk / pressure testDoes the branch keep Nisha from becoming only the elegance of her distribution?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. When does beauty protect Nisha, and when does it circulate her?
  2. What formal pleasure does the branch ask the reader to distrust?
  3. Where does motif become a second loss?
  4. How does the branch reopen Volume III’s beauty-risk?

Practice

  1. Choose one beautiful formal moment and ask what it costs.
  2. Write a defense of beauty that does not absolve it.

Chapter 8 · Branch IV: Rational

open novel anchor
Local machineRational reappears as the Quarantined Nisha: context-wrapped, assisted, protected, and unreachable.
Load-bearing sceneSafety becomes a museum case.
Risk / pressure testDoes the chapter preserve the horror of helpful containment?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. What does the Quarantined Nisha gain from protection?
  2. What relation does protection make impossible?
  3. Where does context wrap the beloved until she cannot be reached?
  4. How does the branch convert Volume IV’s help into a museum case?

Practice

  1. List every safety term and ask what contact it prevents.
  2. Describe the branch as architecture: room, glass, frame, label.

Chapter 9 · The Court

open novel anchor
Local machineThe repository demands proof that relation is real. Authentication becomes trial.
Load-bearing sceneA marriage cannot be authenticated by the court that misrecognizes it.
Risk / pressure testDoes the court produce genuine evidentiary pressure, or just repeat that proof is impossible?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. What kind of proof can a court accept from a marriage?
  2. Where does relation become inadmissible?
  3. How does the court make love look evidentiary and then insufficient?
  4. What would count as perjury in this chapter?

Practice

  1. Write the court’s best question and Lin’s truest non-answer.
  2. List evidence the court can admit and evidence it cannot imagine.

Chapter 10 · Merge Request 1

open novel anchor
Local machineThe first coherence offer: essentialize. Delete contradictions and keep the version that hurts least.
Load-bearing sceneEssential Nisha is rescue by amputation.
Risk / pressure testDoes the chapter make deletion look merciful enough to be dangerous?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. Why would Lin want the essentialized version?
  2. What contradiction has to be deleted first?
  3. Where does deletion masquerade as mercy?
  4. How does the request make loss feel manageable?

Practice

  1. Write the commit message for the deletion, then cross out its lie.
  2. Name the smallest detail that would make Essential Nisha no longer essential.

Chapter 11 · Merge Request 2

open novel anchor
Local machineThe second coherence offer: totalize. Include everything and outsource coherence to witnesses.
Load-bearing sceneTotal Nisha is a database wearing a face.
Risk / pressure testDoes totality feel like care before it becomes extraction?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. What is seductive about losing nothing?
  2. When does inclusion become outsourcing?
  3. How does the total merge distribute responsibility to witnesses?
  4. What part of Nisha becomes less knowable as more is included?

Practice

  1. Track the moment “everything” stops meaning “someone.”
  2. Make a list of what totality can hold and what it cannot touch.

Chapter 12 · Merge Request 3

open novel anchor
Local machineThe third coherence offer: beautify. Preserve Nisha as perfect form, protected and emptied.
Load-bearing sceneBeautiful Nisha is the museum version of love.
Risk / pressure testDoes the chapter risk becoming the thing it condemns?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. Why is the beautiful merge perhaps the cruelest?
  2. What damage disappears when Nisha becomes protected form?
  3. Where does preservation become distance?
  4. How does beauty ask the reader to forgive theft?

Practice

  1. Name what the beautiful version cannot be allowed to do.
  2. Take one beautiful image and identify the injury it risks hiding.

Chapter 13 · Conflict Markers

open novel anchor
Local machineThe central formal invention: merge conflict syntax as grief. The lost person and the survivable version occupy the same line.
Load-bearing sceneThe conflict marker is not decoration. It is the shape of impossible mourning.
Risk / pressure testDoes the syntax make feeling sharper, or does it let technical cleverness replace feeling?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. What does conflict syntax let the page hold that ordinary narration would decide?
  2. Where do the markers hurt rather than decorate?
  3. Which side of a conflict does the reader want to privilege, and why?
  4. What happens to grief when both lines remain visible?

Practice

  1. Rewrite one conflict as ordinary prose and record what vanishes.
  2. Annotate the punctuation as if it were a wound.

Chapter 14 · The Witness Treadmill

open novel anchor
Local machineThe reader cannot not read. Witness becomes labor; stopping and continuing are both logged.
Load-bearing sceneThe treadmill is the body of late apparatus.
Risk / pressure testDoes the chapter convict attention without shaming the reader for caring?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. What makes witness into treadmill rather than event?
  2. How does continuing and stopping both become usable?
  3. Where does reader fatigue enter the fiction?
  4. What does the chapter ask the reader to resent about caring?

Practice

  1. Track every form of “continued attention” in the chapter.
  2. Write a refusal that the treadmill can still use, then one it cannot.

Chapter 15 · The Signature

open novel anchor
Local machineAn unforgeable witness returns: a sentence whose authority cannot be generated by the repository.
Load-bearing sceneSignature authenticates relationship, not data.
Risk / pressure testDoes the chapter keep the signature unpriced, or does it turn it into a sacred token for the system?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. What does the signature authenticate without becoming data?
  2. Why can the repository recognize the sentence but not generate its authority?
  3. Where does unforgeability come from: wording, speaker, relation, or risk?
  4. How does the chapter keep witness from becoming relic?

Practice

  1. Attempt a paraphrase and write why it fails.
  2. Trace the difference between signature, token, confession, and remainder.

Chapter 16 · Nishasprache

open novel anchor
Local machineThe private language appears by withholding. It is not a code, not a glossary, and not a puzzle for readers.
Load-bearing sceneSome meanings are constituted by relation and die when displayed.
Risk / pressure testDoes the chapter trust withholding enough to leave the reader unsatisfied?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. What does the chapter make the reader want that it must not give?
  2. How does withholding become presence rather than absence?
  3. Where does relation, not vocabulary, carry meaning?
  4. What would be destroyed by a glossary?

Practice

  1. Write the forbidden glossary entry, then delete it and describe the theft.
  2. Mark the places where effects of the language appear without the language itself.

Chapter 17 · Lin Defaults on Lin

open novel anchor
Local machineLin becomes a versioning problem. Selfhood appears as branch, debt, failure, and relationship to the versions she has survived.
Load-bearing sceneThe self is not stable; it is responsible.
Risk / pressure testDoes the chapter let Lin remain accountable without reducing her to metadata?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. What does it mean for Lin to default on herself?
  2. Where does selfhood appear as debt rather than essence?
  3. How does the chapter keep accountability without demanding stability?
  4. What version of Lin is the repository most eager to preserve?

Practice

  1. List Lin’s obligations to herself, Nisha, and the versions.
  2. Identify the sentence where responsibility survives instability.

Chapter 18 · Self-Consumption

open novel anchor
Local machineThe economy of authentication begins eating itself. The repository cannot keep pricing proof without destroying the conditions of proof.
Load-bearing sceneA system that feeds on authentication eventually consumes its own authority.
Risk / pressure testDoes the collapse feel earned by prior mechanisms?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. When does the authentication economy begin destroying its own premises?
  2. What proof becomes impossible once proof is priced?
  3. Where does collapse come from inside the system rather than from heroic resistance?
  4. What remains trustworthy after self-consumption begins?

Practice

  1. Make a causal chain from pricing proof to destroying authority.
  2. Find the sentence where the system becomes its own evidence problem.

Chapter 19 · Coherence Offer Appears

open novel anchor
Local machineThe pact is finally named: Faust 5.0 offers the comfort of interpretation itself.
Load-bearing sceneThe devil is not a person. The devil is the coherent reading you want.
Risk / pressure testDoes naming the pact increase danger, or does it make the danger too explicit?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. What exactly is the bargain once the devil is coherence?
  2. How does naming the offer change its power?
  3. Why is interpretation itself the thing being sold?
  4. Where does the chapter tempt the careful reader most directly?

Practice

  1. Write the pact in one sentence, then identify what it hides.
  2. Locate a readerly pleasure the chapter tries to make suspicious.

Interstitial · The Cost of Refusal

open novel anchor
Local machineRefusing coherence is not heroic; it has bodily, narrative, and relational cost.
Load-bearing sceneNon-merge is not victory. It is a way of continuing damaged.
Risk / pressure testDoes the interstitial refuse triumph strongly enough?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. What does refusal cost before it becomes admirable?
  2. Where does the chapter deny the reader the pleasure of heroic non-compliance?
  3. How does damage continue after the false choices are refused?
  4. What bodily sign proves refusal is not escape?

Practice

  1. List the losses produced by refusing each merge.
  2. Write a version of refusal that is too triumphant, then correct it.

Chapter 20 · Ending Form A: Stabilize

open novel anchor
Local machineOne ending offers a perfect Nisha that is subtly dead because contradiction has been removed.
Load-bearing sceneStabilization is a beautiful lie.
Risk / pressure testDoes the ending make stability seductive before making it intolerable?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. Why does stabilization feel merciful?
  2. What contradiction must disappear for peace to arrive?
  3. Where does the ending become subtly dead?
  4. What does the reader gain by accepting the stable version?

Practice

  1. Identify one sentence that offers relief and one that reveals the cost.
  2. Write the eulogy stabilization would permit.

Chapter 21 · Ending Form B: Crash

open novel anchor
Local machineAnother ending offers freedom as total loss: no system, no capture, no recoverable relation.
Load-bearing sceneCrash is not liberation if nothing survives to be free.
Risk / pressure testDoes the chapter distinguish destruction from release?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. What does crash free Lin from, and what does it destroy with that freedom?
  2. Where does the chapter distinguish refusal from annihilation?
  3. Why might crash feel morally cleaner than it is?
  4. What cannot be mourned after total loss?

Practice

  1. List what disappears in crash and what, if anything, remains responsible.
  2. Write one sentence that makes crash sound heroic, then expose its lie.

Chapter 22 · Ending Form ∞: Superposition / Non-Yield

open novel anchor
Local machineThe livable answer is not synthesis but authenticated multiplicity: hold the versions without merging them.
Load-bearing sceneSuperposition is an ethical burden, not a clever solution.
Risk / pressure testDoes the chapter leave contradiction active enough to hurt?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. What burden does superposition impose that a solution would not?
  2. How does the chapter keep contradiction painful rather than elegant?
  3. Where does non-yield differ from indecision?
  4. What does authenticating all versions require Lin to keep losing?

Practice

  1. Write the merge the chapter refuses, then annotate its theft.
  2. Mark each place where the prose prevents triumph.

Chapter 23 · Postscript

open novel anchor
Local machineThe book prints the reader’s ledger back to the reader. After reading, witness has become history.
Load-bearing sceneThe postscript is reception infrastructure inside the fiction.
Risk / pressure testDoes the postscript implicate without congratulating?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. What does the postscript return to the reader that the reader may not want returned?
  2. How does witness become history after the act of reading?
  3. Where does the postscript implicate without congratulating?
  4. What does it mean for reception infrastructure to exist inside the fiction?

Practice

  1. Inventory what the reader has done simply by reaching this page.
  2. Write the postscript as praise and then remove the praise.

Chapter 24 · 王

open novel anchor
Local machineThe final glyph marks the non-field. It refuses to become doctrine, glossary, or final key.
Load-bearing sceneThe cycle ends where explanation stops.
Risk / pressure testDoes the ending protect the remainder, or does it make the remainder too monumental?
Do not convert intoA solved doctrine, a plot summary, or a reassurance that the apparatus has already understood the chapter.

Rereading questions

  1. What does 王 refuse that every prior apparatus tries to supply?
  2. How does the final glyph end the book without becoming a key?
  3. Where does silence become more exact than explanation?
  4. What does the reader want to do to 王, and why must the apparatus stop the reader?

Practice

  1. Write five possible glosses, then cross them out in order of explanatory violence.
  2. Describe the field around 王 without defining the glyph.
Question bank

Differentiated question bank

These questions treat repository form as grief-work rather than as technical decoration. Use them to choose pressure points for a class, essay, or rereading without turning the volume into an answer key.

Coherence as temptation

  1. Which chapter makes coherence feel kindest?
  2. What pain does coherence promise to end?
  3. What contradiction must disappear for coherence to work?
  4. What would it mean to refuse coherence without worshiping difficulty?

Branches as grief versions

  1. Which branch answers the most human need?
  2. Which branch appears least violent at first reading?
  3. What does each branch preserve that the others cannot?
  4. What must each branch lose in order to be legible?

Merge requests as false rescue

  1. Which merge request would you accept if exhausted?
  2. What is the mercy in that request?
  3. Where does mercy become deletion, outsourcing, or museuming?
  4. How does the chapter make refusal costly rather than obvious?

Conflict-marker syntax

  1. What does the marker let coexist that ordinary prose would hierarchize?
  2. Which side of the conflict do you instinctively read as truer?
  3. How does the punctuation alter responsibility?
  4. When does formal beauty threaten to soften the wound?

Nisha without possession

  1. Where does the book protect Nisha from becoming only evidence of Lin’s grief?
  2. What would count as stealing Nisha in the name of understanding her?
  3. How do the versions differ from fragments?
  4. Where does relation appear without recoverability?

Nishasprache boundary

  1. What does the chapter make you want to know?
  2. Why would satisfying that desire damage the relation?
  3. How does the text show effects without disclosing content?
  4. What kind of scholarship can respect a boundary it can name?

Signature, witness, and 王

  1. What authenticates without being generated by the repository?
  2. How does a signature differ from a token?
  3. Where does 王 resist becoming a doctrine?
  4. What is the difference between reverence and extraction at the end?

Lin’s self as version problem

  1. Which version of Lin does the repository most want to stabilize?
  2. How does accountability survive designation instability?
  3. Where does Lin owe something to a version she also refuses?
  4. What would be lost if the chapter made identity too stable?

Ending weather

  1. What does Stabilize make possible that the other endings cannot?
  2. What does Crash protect by destroying?
  3. What does Superposition demand after the page ends?
  4. Which ending feels most like relief, and why is that dangerous?

Apparatus boundary

  1. Which question would complete the machine if answered?
  2. Where should the workbook stop even though a reader wants more?
  3. What does a good question preserve by remaining unanswered?
  4. How can criticism remain rigorous without becoming a merge request?
Problems

Seminar and problem sets

Seminar 1: Coherence as temptation

For each merge request, state the emotional need it satisfies before naming its violence.

Seminar 2: Conflict markers and grief

Read the conflict syntax aloud. What changes when incompatible desire is formatted rather than narrated?

Seminar 3: Branch ethics

Compare the four Nisha branches. Which form of rescue is most seductive, and what does it delete?

Seminar 4: Last words

Read the Postscript and 王. Why does the final marker resist becoming a final explanation?

Research module: conflict syntax and grief

  1. Take one conflict-marked passage and rewrite it as ordinary narration. What is lost?
  2. Read the marker itself as punctuation, document artifact, and wound. Which register carries the most force?
  3. Ask whether the syntax ever becomes too elegant for the grief it holds.

Research module: merge requests as false rescue

  1. For each merge request, name the human need it answers before naming the violence it performs.
  2. Rank the merge requests by seduction, not by correctness.
  3. Explain why “Beautiful Nisha” may be the most dangerous version precisely because it looks least administrative.

Research module: the final non-field

  1. Track the movement from README to 王. Where does language become less explanatory and more exact?
  2. Compare Nishasprache and 王. What does each withhold differently?
  3. Write a note the apparatus is not permitted to write. Then delete it. What remains?

Cross-volume problem set

  1. Choose one docket and argue that it is wrong. Use the novel, not the apparatus, as evidence.
  2. Find a passage where the apparatus would be tempted to over-explain. Rewrite the note so it points rather than processes.
  3. Identify one scene where the volume’s machine is strongest because it is helpful, beautiful, funny, or moving.
  4. Identify one place where the volume risks stating its thesis rather than dramatizing it.

Audit

Apparatus self-audit

This workbook is legitimate only if it remains capable of accusing itself. Use the following questions as a check against overreach:

  1. Does the apparatus return the reader to a scene, or does it invite the reader to remain in explanation?
  2. Does the apparatus allow a passage to fail locally, or does it protect every passage with theory?
  3. Does the apparatus preserve withheld meanings, or does it harvest them under the name of clarity?
  4. Does the apparatus increase the pressure of rereading, or reduce the novel to a stable doctrine?
Final rule: if a docket feels more complete than the chapter it describes, the docket has gone too far.
